Our world is changing at a faster rate than every before. Gone are the days when you could count on building your career at the first company that hired you right out of college. Millenials, for example, expect to stay at any given job for less than three years!
In this fast-paced economy, you need to be continually improving your resume and making yourself more attractive to employers to get ahead. Here are a few ways to stay on top of your game.
Keep Learning
Never stop growing your skills. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways – you could take a class, earn a certification, or even go back to school for an advanced degree. Think outside of the box, too. Even if you’re a programmer, you might consider attending leadership seminars or taking classes on marketing. Having a variety of skills and knowledge areas helps sets you apart from your competition.
Be Active
You don’t have to be an industry expert to be involved. You might consider joining a social organization related to your industry, maintaining an active social media presence where you regularly link to valuable content, or even volunteering your skills to help out somehow in the community. These experiences can elevate your name as your brand and get you on the radar for potential employers.
Stay Professional
Beyond the obvious application of this advice on your social media pages, where a few too many public intoxication photos can hurt your chances in your job hunt, this also applies at your current job or at school. To earn a recommendation from your boss, coworker, or teacher, you have to be the kind of person that they’re comfortable recommending. If nothing else, be a hard worker, keep a positive outlook, and always be available to lend a helping hand.
