8 Clever Questions to Ask During the Interview Process

There is that inevitable moment in interviews where the interviewer looks at you and says, “Do you have any questions for me?” And it is absolutely critical that you do. Saying you do not have any questions indicates to the interviewer that you are uninterested in the position or the company and that is absolutely not something you want to convey during a job interview.

It is highly recommended that before an interview you carefully review the company’s website, Google them to see what, if anything, was written about them in the press recently, and take a peek into LinkedIn to learn more about the people with which you will be interviewing. Think of questions you would like to ask based on the information you read and learn.

It is always a smart idea to bring a notebook to an interview in case you want to jot down any important information. This is also a great place to write questions you would like to ask during the interview. Write the questions in order of most to least important, in case you have limited time.

If you are really stuck or just want to make sure you have a few tucked in your back pocket in case the interview answers all of your intended questions, here are some clever ones to consider:

1. Ask questions about what the person you are interviewing with is most proud. This helps you build trust with them and enables them to talk about things which likely makes them most happy and excited. This question can also show you are a good listener!
2. Would you have described the company the same way you do now, one year ago?
3. Has anyone told you something highly productive and insightful on an exit interview?
4. What would those who report to you say about your approach to managing big ideas?
5. How has the founder or owner’s leadership influenced your environment? Can you describe how that that reflects on employee buy-in?
6. Is there anything that is especially at stake when making this hire?
7. What do you think it is that keeps employees at this company?
8. What do you think is the company’s biggest challenge?
