High salaries can often be incredibly misleading. Too often people are mesmerized by a high number without considering what might be even more important – how much is it going to cost to live where this job opportunity is located.
If you are relocating or considering jobs in multiple cities; it is critical you take into account not only the salary offered but also the cost of living.
Here is how salaries and cost of living in Denver compare to other major cities in the U.S:
Salary ranges in major U.S. cities for positions within Information Technology vary between the low 100’s to the high 80’s depending on the location.
However, if you want to buy a house near in San Francisco where the highest national salaries are found, you will need to spend over $900,000 to purchase it.
Likewise, the rent in some of these higher paying cities is 150% higher than in Denver, Sacramento, Houston and Austin.
In other words, you can make up to 11% more if you chose to live in around Silicon Valley, Washington D.C., Seattle or L.A, but this also means you are required to pay between 35% and 56% more to live there. (Of course, you could earn a bit more or touch less and pay less -- if you wanted to live in Texas.)
