Tech Interview Attire -- Making A Great First Impression

Posted on December 2, 2019 by Bailey Crumpton. Tagged: Resources for Candidates, For Candidates

You scored an interview for your dream job in Colorado, and now it's time to prepare. Aside from knowing how to answer the questions correctly, you're going to want to wear the right tech interview attire. But where do you even begin? We're here to help.

Yes, Colorado is crushing it in the business scene, but we have a unique style. Formality ranges from company to company. There are tips and tricks to know when you're wearing the appropriate ensemble for your interview. And yes, it does matter because first impressions are everything. You don't want to turn off your prospective employer by being too casual or not casual enough. Let's help you find the fine line.

How to Find the Right Tech Interview Attire

There is a wide range of appropriate attire, depending on the company and its location. For example, when you're applying for a job in Downtown Denver, the vibe is usually more business casual. Most of our business partners rock this attire daily, even when clients are in town.

So, great, but what does business casual mean?

Business Casual Basics for Women

  • A professional dress

Business Casual Basics for Men

  • Khaki, gabardine, wool, or cotton pants
  • Cotton long-sleeve, button-down shirts
  • Sweaters
  • Leather shoes, in black and brown
  • Leather belt, in black and brown
  • A selection of ties

Tips for Preparing for Your Interview

For an interview, you'll always want to look professional. Make sure that your clothes are neatly pressed and free from stains or odors. And if you're not sure what the acceptable style is for your prospective employer, you can do a little research on their website to get a feel for their vibe — which is something you should do regardless. You can also reach out to your recruiter and get their advice on what you can wear.

Although Colorado rocks a more casual lifestyle, dressing your best will always bode well when you're trying to score an awesome first impression. In fact, studies show that dressing well helps build confidence and leads to greater success. It makes sense. When you feel comfortable and look nice, you're going to exude better energy than if you're worried about what you're wearing.

Where to Get Advice for the Right Tech Interview Attire

Aside from your recruiter, you can reach out to employees at the company, especially if you have previous connections. If you don't, do some research on LinkedIn. Search for the company and check their employees' style in their profile pictures.

And it honestly never hurts to ask a team member what the dress code is in the office. Being upfront and doing your research will only help you feel more prepared for your interview

What Not to Wear to an Interview

Like we said, making a great first impression is everything. You have mere moments to let your future employer feel confident that you're the right choice. If you show up looking sloppy, that will directly reflect your personality. And chances are, you will not get another opportunity to correct that mistake.

Avoid wearing a hat, shorts, flip flops, and tees to your interview. Keep it safe by choosing a business casual ensemble, even if the company is super informal. You want to look professional from the start. If you get the job offer and they allow casual wear, save that for your time as an employee.

All in all, we want you to feel comfortable when you're heading into an interview. To feel the most like yourself, find where your style fits into the standard Colorado business casual look. When you feel like yourself, you'll be more confident. Your confidence will directly transfer into your preparedness. As a result, you'll be able to wow the socks off of your prospective employer.
